Deal or no deal? Not for the title
In the $5,000 buy-in Big One at Harrah's Carnavale of Poker in 2000, 1999 Player of the Year Hieu "Tony" Ma whispered to me, "Phil, how sweet is it that this Frenchman keeps betting all of his chips pre-flop? You're going to bust him for sure!" At the time, I agreed with Ma. I love playing against a "slider" (someone who moves all of his chips into the middle regardless of how high the blinds have risen) because once he slides it all-in, he can't fold when you pick up a big pair behind him...

To show or not to show? That is the question
There are two schools of thought when it comes to revealing your cards after everyone else has folded and the hand is over. One asks, why would you? Why give your opponents free information about how you play when they didn't pay for it? While I totally understand and respect this strategy, I believe that in certain situations, it can be advantageous to show opponents your cards. When you watch me play poker on television, notice that I often show my hand. Of course, I'm not doing this randomly...

Poker events: Buddies think they know when to hold'em
CHICAGO - The bond between buddies Craig Rabin and Jason Beck is obvious, particularly in the way they tend to finish the dangling end of each other's sentences. The way Beck tells it, he called Rabin as soon as he got the idea in 2004 to start a business that would host free college poker tournaments at which students would compete for scholarships. It didn't matter that the pair was separated by more than a thousand miles, with Beck in college in Miami and Rabin at Illinois State University in...

There are a few reasons luck's not on your side
There's a quote I once heard that I thought was genius: "Poker is a lot like sex. Everybody thinks they are great at it, but most people don't really know what they're doing." Because of that truth, people generally blame their losing streaks on bad luck. Well, while bad luck can certainly play a role, there might just be other pressing factors for your losing. Here are the top five reasons: Bad luck — If this is your worst problem, then, ironically, you're in luck! Why? Poker is a game where luck...

Head-to-head with a Big Game player
LAST FALL, I began making forays into the "Big Game" at the Bellagio, a high-stakes affair seemingly always in progress. The first four occasions, I won almost $500,000 without a single loss. Then, in December, I played three more times over a weekend and lost $176,000. After arriving in Vegas that Friday night, I should have gone straight to bed, but instead lost $80,000. Saturday, still tired and off my game, I lost another $43,000, and finally, on Sunday, I risked all the remaining cash I had...
